Prep Time: 15 minutes
Slow Cooker Time: 5 hours
I first had chili dogs prepared in the crock pot years ago during a time when I was working the gaming department at a local hobby shop. One of my friends brought in a huge crocks worth of chili dogs for a marathon gaming session and everybody loved them. This recipe is a little more involved than that first time, but still a cinch to prepare.
1 lb. ground round beef
1 cup onions, chopped
3 cloves garlic, finely chopped (how to)
2 cans (14.5 oz.) diced tomatoes, undrained
1 Tbs. chili powder
2 tsp. ground cumin
1 tsp. Worcestershire sauce
1/2 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. pepper
1 pkg. hot dogs (8 ct.)
8 hot dog buns
1/4 cup onion, chopped (topping)
3/4 cup shredded Cheddar cheese (topping)
1. In a large sauté pan, cook ground beef, 1 cup onions and the garlic over medium-high heat about 5 to 7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until beef is no longer pink. Drain, if necessary.
2. In the slow cooker, place beef mixture, tomatoes, chili powder, cumin, Worcestershire sauce, salt and pepper; mix until well combined. Place hot dogs in slow cooker; spoon chili mixture over the dogs.
3. Cover; cook on LOW heat setting for 4 to 6 hours.
4. Serve chili dogs in buns; top with onion and cheese.
If it hadn’t been for Magic the Gathering I never would have stumbled upon this wonderful way of making one of our greatest culinary gifts: chili dogs.
